Feature Spotlight: Client Email Preferences

By Matt / April 13th, 2020

In WHMCS 7.10, we're giving customers greater control over the email notifications they receive with a new Email Preferences feature.

Accessed via the Client Profile section within the client area, the new Email Preferences functionality brings the same level of control over emails a client receives as Sub-Accounts and Contacts have had before.

Emails are grouped into categories of related emails. The categories include:
  • General - these include all account related emails such as the Welcome email when a user first signs up, Order Confirmations, Credit Card Expiry emails and anything else which doesn't fit in to any other category below.
  • Invoice - the invoice category includes new invoice notification emails, reminders and overdue notices, as well as credit card related payment attempt outcome emails.
  • Support - customers and contacts/sub-accounts will always receive email notifications of updates to support tickets they open, but by enabling Support notifications, they can opt-in to also receive notifications of updates made to support tickets opened by others with access to the account.
  • Product - the product category includes all emails relating to products and services customers buy from you, including welcome emails, suspension notices and other service related activity notifications.
  • Domain - the domain category controls emails relating to domain registrations, transfers and renewals, including lifecycle management emails such as upcoming expiry reminders.
  • Affiliate - the affiliate category controls emails relating to the affiliate program, specifically at the time of writing, this is limited to the monthly referrals report that is sent at the start of each month.
These new controls allow the account holder to reduce the frequency and number of emails they receive from you, enabling them to make better use of the contacts and sub-accounts features for proper separate of responsibilities within larger organisations.

In addition to adding these new controls for the primary account holder, we've also made improvements to the way we list email notification preference options globally, adding additional help text that makes the preference controls easier to use and understand for new users.

Email Preferences are available in WHMCS 7.10 and can be accessed via the client area "Account Details" pages, as well as via the Profile and Contacts tabs within the admin area "Client Profile" pages. Full documentation is available here.

The introduction of this functionality was a direct result of requests from users on our feature requests system, receiving over 65 votes. If there's a feature you would like to see added to WHMCS, we invite you to add your votes or submit a new request.
