Feature Spotlight: Registrar TLD & Pricing Sync

By Matt / March 17th, 2020

With the advent of New TLDs, the number of TLDs available for website owners to choose from has sky rocketed to over 1500. This made the task of setting up and managing TLDS many times more complex and time consuming for web hosting owners. But this is about to change with the introduction of the TLD & Pricing Sync utility in WHMCS 7.10.

The new TLD & Pricing Sync tool in WHMCS 7.10 makes it quicker and easier to populate the TLDs you offer and set retail pricing for all the registration periods for which they are available en masse, and in just a few clicks.

In this blog post, we take a look at some of the use cases for the new tool and a deeper dive into the functionality it offers.

When would I use this tool?
The new TLD & Pricing Sync tool has many use cases. Here are just some of them:

New Users: Faster Initial Setup
For users who are new to WHMCS, the new tool provides a quicker and easier way to get up and running with the ability to import hundreds of TLDs from your domain registrar of choice in just a few clicks and have retail pricing set based on rules you define.

Existing Users: Identify and add TLDs you are not yet offering
For existing users, one of the most obvious uses for the tool is to identify TLDs which you are not yet offering which are available to you. With great names becoming harder and harder to find with the major TLDs, offering more TLDs can be a way to help your customers find the perfect name.

Existing Users: Check/verify your margins
Another use for existing users is to check and verify your margins. The tool lists all of the TLDs available via your domain registrar along with the cost pricing and retail pricing you offer. Any TLDs which are being sold below cost price are immediately highlighted, but more than that, you're able to see the exact margin you're making, both as a percentage or a monetary amount, for each TLD you offer, enabling you to check and ensure you're pricing is set correctly.

Existing Users: Handle pricing changes
Price increases are becoming more and more common, and with the new tool, it's easy to see when cost prices change and update your existing retail pricing based on this.

Sounds great! How does it work?
The TLD & Pricing Sync utility can be found under the Utilities menu and is new functionality that has been added to the core of WHMCS in 7.10, but that works with any registrar module which supports the new methods.

At the time of writing, we have implemented it into our two most popular registrar modules - Enom and ResellerClub - as well as all the other registrar modules that run upon the same LogicBoxes platform as ResellerClub. Developer documentation has also been made available for 3rd party registrar module developers to implement it into their own modules.

When the tool is accessed, you will first be prompted to choose the registrar you wish to fetch TLDs and Pricing information from. Once the data has been obtained, you will see a pricing matrix like the one pictured below.

Of note here you can see immediately which TLDs you are and are not selling, the registration period, cost price and retail pricing for each of the four sale types - Register, Transfer, Renew and Redemption - see any which are below cost price highlighted in red, and have easy access to open and manipulate pricing.

You don't have to edit pricing manually though, you can simply select TLDs from the list and have pricing set and adjusted based on rules you define. Functionality includes:
  • See all TLDs available from your domain registrar of choice
  • See which of those TLDs you are selling/not-selling
  • See which of those TLDs you are selling with which Registrar
  • See your cost prices for Registrations, Transfers, Renewals and Redemption
  • See the margin based on your selling price as either a percentage or monetary amount
  • Import New TLDs and set pricing automatically based on rules you define
  • Update pricing of existing TLDs using rules you define
When it comes to setting pricing, you can apply markup rules that are either percentage or based on a fixed monetary amount.

A rounding option allows you to have the calculated selling price rounded to the nearest human-friendly ending such as .50 or .95 ensuring you have selling prices that not only give you the margin you desire, but also look good and are easy to remember.
